Hydropower and Ocean Energy

Hydropower and ocean energy technologies indirectly tap the Earth’s solar energy flux. Solar heat warms the upper layers of the ocean and other bodies of water and drives the cycle of evaporation and precipitation of water. By damming rivers or placing turbines in rivers and areas of the ocean with significant tides and currents, the power inherent in flowing water can be captured to generate electricity.
