Chapter 1
History of the Code Rules for Accreditation, Certification, and Related Issues

This chapter provides an overview of the history of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (B&PV) Code from its inception through its incorporation of nuclear components and up to the present. Applicable rules for certification and accreditation were developed in parallel with the growth of the Code. From earlier coverage of boilers and pressure vessels, the nuclear initiative required coverage for piping, pumps, valves, storage tanks, vessel internals, and both component and pipe supports.
