Chapter 31
Power and Process Piping Lessons Learned

Excerpt

Over the past 40 years piping designed to either the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code or the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code has proved it will perform well. That being said, why are there still failures in the industry? This chapter will attempt to review some significant failures or more common types of failures and provide some guidance on how they can be avoided. The design rules have proved adequate and have significant margin for safety if all of the design requirements have been identified. This is proving to be no small task and involves the original design as well as operations and maintenance activities.
