Electronic Installations and Their Heat Problems


Communications, data, and information systems are assembled using various electronic components. Without the component, part or all of the system may be down, essentially a system failure. The most frequent cause is overheating (inadequate air flow area supplied) which historically occurs in about one of seven racks. Electronic cooling needs differ from those in the process and air conditioning industries. For the latter, the heat exchanger engineer selects equipment to provide the heating or cooling desired. They rarely select the components of the ECS duct system. Electronics engineers often approve the assembly of the screen room and duct system. Heat exchanger engineers become involved when overheating problems occur. In process cooling and in air conditioning , heat exchangers are usually the medium used to transfer heat. Generally (though not always), heat exchangers are not directly used in electronics cooling. The chapters of Part 3 describe typical problems faced in this industry and offer pointers on locating, avoiding, and correcting them. It should be noted that about 90% of heat transfer tasks in the process and air conditioning industries involve selecting exchangers and their components. In the cooling of electronics, almost all problems faced are related to solving and/or avoiding trouble jobs. No heat exchangers are usually involved except for the A/C system evaporator and condenser.
