An Introduction to Yasuura’s Method of Modal Expansion for Solving the Problem of Diffraction by a Periodic Structure Simulating a Metamaterial


We introduce Yasuura’s method of modal expansion taking a simple problem of diffraction by a periodically modulated plane (i.e., a grating) simulating a metamaterial and the surface profile should be determined so that the grating carries out its purpose as a metamaterial. Yasuura’s method would be useful in finding the grating parameters because it is an easy and reliable way of solving boundary-value problems to the Helmholtz’s equation which dominates the grating phenomena.
