In the previous chapter, we studied unbalance as a malfunction of rotor systems. Rotor bow is another malfunction that can produce 1X vibration. Rotor bow has been known to cause expensive delays in the startup of large steam and gas turbines and has led to significant internal damage of machines. In severe cases, a rotor bow can produce such high levels of vibration that it becomes impossible to pass through a balance resonance. Thus, prevention of rotor bow is an important part of machinery management. Machinery operation guidelines should be strictly followed, supplemented by a thorough understanding of the physical causes of rotor bow.
