One-Dimensional Aerodynamic Performance Analysis


Due to the highly complex flow in centrifugal compressors, sophisticated two- and three-dimensional inviscid and viscous flow analysis codes are routinely employed in modern aerodynamic design and analysis. Indeed, these sophisticated analyses are leading to levels of efficiency believed to be unattainable a few years ago. Yet, the very complexity of these flows results in one of the many contradictions encountered by the centrifugal compressor aerodynamicist—namely, that the most accurate and reliable performance analysis techniques continue to be based on one-dimensional flow models. This situation is certainly not unique to centrifugal compressor analysis. Whenever fundamental analysis techniques prove inadequate for a problem, investigators routinely employ a combination of fundamental analysis and empirical models to address the problem. In fact, the entire field of boundary layer analysis is based on this approach.
