Chapter 7
Gas Phase Lubrication

Excerpt

Lubrication by surrounding gas, gasses incorporated within a film or supplied to the area of contact is a new and exciting research field. The concept is that gas lubrication relates to chemisorption on nascent surface (virgin surface in older terminology) as well as to their complex interaction. The lubrication by hydrogen gas of diamond-like carbon (DLC), especially for hydrogenated DLC, is also introduced.

  • 7.1 Lubrication With Chemisorbed Gas
  • 7.2 Tribochemical Reactions of Gases on Nascent Surfaces
  • 7.3 Low Friction Involved in DLC
  • 7.4 Hydrogen Interaction with DLC
