Over the next few decades, air traffic and thus also hazard and environmental potential in the vicinity of airports, will rise rapidly. Public acceptance of increasing flight traffic is diminishing even today. There is more and more debate about the issues of safety, environmental compatibility, cost-effectiveness and noise pollution during takeoff and touchdown. These aspects are not only relevant for acceptance by the general public but also, to an increasing degree, for airport expansion and construction. Targeted risk management may prove very helpful in optimizing the above problems. Risk management, as developed by the TÜV SÜD Group over decades, is illustrated by means of a specific case study entitled “Safety over a specific approach and departure zone”.
