Three Dimensional Simulation and Visualization of Larix Crown Models


Forestry landscape simulation and visualization has attract much more concerns in GIS, computer simulation, simulation and visualization fields. Different from the visualization of the 3D trees in computer game design domain, representation of 3D trees models are mainly used for assisting forestry surveying work. In this paper, we introduce a parameter-based method for simulation and visualization of 3D larix crown models. First, the forest stand data acquired from forestry surveying was stored in database. Second, a parameter-based surfaces method was introduced for description of the shape of 3D larix crowns and the modeling parameters are also stored in database. Third, a 3D interactive visualization system based on OpenGL has been implemented by VC++6.0 integrated development tools which can fetches the forestry stand data and then rapidly representing 3D larix forestry crown models. Finally, we take real larix forestry survey data as example for evaluating our approaches, the results show that prototype system can clearly represent the 3D coniferous crown models and the spatial distribution of the main branches, which can effectively assist forestry surveying work.
