Development of Portable Facing Machine Tool for Machining of Tube Sheet and Shell of a Heat Exchanger


Usually in Shell and Tube heat exchangers, at the time of assembly of the Tube bundle assembly, the gasket seating face of the flanges and the gasket seating face of the Tube sheet might get distorted and damaged. Due to this distortion and damage there is a possibility of leakage during hydrotest of the equipment. To correct this distortion and damages, it is necessary to do machining in that area to attain a flat surface with required surface finish. But due to the weight and size of the assemblies it is difficult to move the equipment to the floor boring machine and machine the flat surface.

In order to make it easier, a portable machine tool assembly is designed so that this machine can be moved near the equipment and machining can be done. Here a tool will rotate with respect to a horizontal axis and automatic feed is given perpendicular to that axis so that the facing operation is done and the gasket mating surface of the tube sheet is devoid of distortion and damage. Thus, this simple tool ensures leak tight joint and reliable equipment.
