A Compact Circularly Polarized Microstrip Antenna for UHF RFID Readers


This paper presents a low cost, compact, circularly polarized (CP) square microstrip (patch) antenna with truncated corners for RFID readers working at 2.45 GHz. The antenna is fed by a microstrip line at the edge with a matching network containing a quarter-wave transformer. The area of the proposed antenna can be reduced by about 51% compared to a conventional corner truncated circular polarized square patch by inserting four pair of slits. The paper presents the proposed design along with simulations and measurements of three fabricated variations on the design; and an optimized design for minimum patch area.
