Exchange Helical Shape from a Mechanical CAD System to a Ship CAD System Based on Shape Approximation


Recently, collaborative design has played a vital role in the product design process, and interoperability is one of key issues in the collaborative design working environment, the reason is that companies and their partners commonly use different computer-aided design (CAD) systems to design product. For example, shipyards mainly use ship CAD system and their equipment suppliers use mechanical CAD system. In addition, CAD systems provide modeling functionality which is based on distinct modeling units. Therefore, to exchange design data, we have to map these two distinct modeling units, however, some modeling units of mechanical CAD system (such as helical feature) can't find the corresponding one in ship CAD system, thus, in this paper, we introduce a method that is based on shape approximation for design data exchange from a mechanical CAD system to a ship CAD system, and experimental result is also given to verify the proposed method.
