This paper is on the design of control systems to handle the the oscillations occurring on tractors without any suspension. During transport phases, the lack of suspension causes the vehicle to bounce and pitch, and makes it difficult to control. A number of different approaches to actively damping the oscillations exist. In the current paper one of these control schemes are adopted and used together with an experimentally verified model of an agricultural tractor to determine the necessary requirements to the hitch valve by means of optimization. The design variables include controller gain, valve response time and valve dead band whereas the criteria are the comfort of the driver, the energy consumption and the loading of the mechanical parts of the hitch linkage.
